  • Onam Festival in Kerala:

Commencing on August 20 and concluding on August 31, the 10-day Thiru-Onam celebrations mark a joyous period in Kerala. Honoring the return of King Mahabali/Maveli, each day from Atham to Thiruvonam holds significance. The final day, Thiruvonam, is paramount, symbolizing the culmination of festivities with the grand Onasadya feast. Familiarize yourself with Onam’s history, importance, and traditions if you join this year’s celebrations.

  • The History of Onam:

Originating in ancient Kerala, Onam has deep roots in mythology. It celebrates the return of King Mahabali, a legendary ruler famed for his just and benevolent governance. The story goes that King Mahabali’s devotion and humility pleased Lord Vishnu, but his growing popularity and power made the gods uneasy. In a clever ruse, Lord Vishnu disguised himself as a dwarf Brahmin, Vamana, and requested land from Mahabali. When Mahabali agreed and offered his head as a stepping stone for Vamana, he was sent to the netherworld. However, Lord Vishnu granted him the boon to visit his people once a year, celebrated as Onam.

  • The Significance of Onam:

Onam is a 10-day festival that brings together family, friends, and communities. The elaborate floral carpet known as “Pookalam” that adorns the entrances of homes is a beautiful sight to behold. The grand feast, “Onasadya,” served on banana leaves, is a culinary delight with various traditional dishes. The Vallam Kali, or the boat race, is another exciting event where beautifully decorated snake boats race in unison. The folk dance, “Pulikali,” where performers dress up as tigers and hunters, adds a touch of vibrant theatrics to the celebration.
